Our key team members are led by:

Giles Gunstone (B.A. FRSA)

Managing Director – Giles has been actively involved in horticulture for over 30 years, since working in the New Zealand kiwifruit industry in 1980. Fascination with exotic fruit led him to trial several exotic species while in Australia. He graduated from Murdoch University in 1978 with a double major in History and Political Theory. Becoming interested in hydroponics as a commercial growing technique, Giles studied micro-propagation and other courses at Diploma level. The company’s first investment was in a piece of land on which to build greenhouses. Very poor soil and the need to conserve water were two important factors in choosing hydroponic cultivation. Lack of quality resources for propagation led to collaboration with Carl and to the development in 1989 of our first single pack nutrient Formulex, and to the rooting hormone, Clonex. In this period we grew commercial tomatoes and herbs in Australia, before finding the company’s long term and continuing focus on making available to the general public good plant nutrition and the highest quality resources for plant propagation. Customers over the ensuing years have been as diverse as lettuce growers in Moscow to floristry suppliers in Sweden, tomato producers in Barbados to amphibian rehydration in zoos.

Carl Barry (B.App..Sc. Dip.Ed.)

Senior Chemist – Carl has worked in the horticultural industry for over 25 years as a grower and nutrient formulation chemist. After graduating with a science degree from the Western Australian Institute of Technology, he worked in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Western Australia, where he was involved in the formulation and testing of buffers and other calibration solutions. Carl joined Growth Technology in Fremantle in 1989 and has been mainly concerned with the development of plant specific and general purpose nutrients. Carl now manages the Growth Technology Australian Office and frequently works with the UK team on new developments.
